My work on the Sahara Farms platform demonstrated that designing for social impact doesn't mean compromising on commercial viability.

Know More
Sahara powers agricultural investment and portfolio management decisions by fusing soil-sensing, IoT, and verified ground-truth data into institutional-grade agronomic insights.
Unmatched Data Supremacy
As the Product designer for Sahara Farms, I took on the challenge of creating a revolutionary platform connecting the African diaspora with agricultural investment opportunities. This case study documents my journey in designing and implementing a solution that bridges international investment with sustainable African agriculture. Working closely with stakeholders in London's Canary Wharf headquarters, I shaped a platform that not only meets sophisticated investment standards but also serves a greater purpose in African agricultural development.

My Role and Problem
Research, Analyst, product Design, User-testing, Usability Testing
Problem
When I first joined the project, I faced the complex task of making agricultural investment accessible to a global audience while maintaining the sophistication expected by corporate investors. Through initial stakeholder meetings, I recognized that the platform needed to do more than facilitate transactions – it needed to tell the story of African agriculture and inspire confidence in potential investors. I began my research by conducting in-depth interviews with members of the African diaspora community, corporate investors, and agricultural experts. My most significant insight came from a series of virtual focus groups with diaspora investors across three continents, where I discovered that their investment decisions were driven not just by returns, but by a deep desire to contribute to Africa's development. This understanding fundamentally shaped my design approach.

Information Architecture Development
My visual design strategy emerged from extensive experimentation with color and typography. I chose to move away from typical fintech design patterns, instead developing a unique visual language that reflected both agricultural heritage and financial sophistication.
Drawing from my research findings, I structured the platform around four key pillars: investment discovery, portfolio management, market intelligence, and impact tracking. I distinctly remember the breakthrough moment when, after several iterations, I realized that integrating educational content throughout the user journey, rather than isolating it in a separate section, would better support users' decision-making process.
I led multiple rounds of usability testing across different user segments. One particularly memorable session with a group of London-based diaspora investors helped us identify and resolve critical issues in our risk assessment visualization. Their feedback led to a complete redesign of how we presented investment risk metrics, resulting in significantly higher user confidence scores.

Impact Measurement
The success metrics exceeded our initial targets, but what truly validated my design decisions were the personal stories from users. I received feedback from a diaspora investor in Canada who successfully completed their first agricultural investment in Ghana using our platform, praising the clarity and confidence our design gave them throughout the process.
Future Vision
Looking ahead, I've outlined a roadmap that includes AI-powered investment recommendations and virtual farm tours. My team is currently prototyping an augmented reality feature that will allow investors to virtually walk through their invested farms, further strengthening the connection between investors and their agricultural investments.
Personal Reflection
This project has been more than just a design challenge – it's been an opportunity to contribute to African agricultural development through thoughtful UX design. The platform's success in connecting diaspora capital with agricultural opportunities has shown me the tremendous impact well-designed digital solutions can have on real-world challenges.
Conclusion
Leading the UI/UX design for Sahara Farms has been a defining project in my career. By focusing on user needs while maintaining high standards for security and transparency, I've helped create a platform that effectively connects diaspora capital with agricultural opportunities in Africa. The platform's success demonstrates how thoughtful UX design can address complex challenges in international development and investment while making a meaningful impact on food security across Africa.
